At Home in Scotland

Wildfowling in Scotland - Pinkfooted geese at dawn

For me, home has always been Scotland and, in many respects, there can be no better place on Earth for an all-round wildfowler to be based. I live within an hour's drive of the Tay, Eden and Forth estuaries and 20 minutes from Loch Leven.

In many respects I feel immensely privileged to have such a wealth of wildfowl virtually on my doorstep. It is not the purpose of this story to relive 30-odd years of wildfowling adventures in the UK, however, so I will merely refer readers to other sources where those episodes of the tale can be found.

One of my books, "Fowler in the Wild" has been published in its entirety on the Internet and the full text can be found at www.premier-pages.co.uk/fowler/. The Magazine button below will also take you to Wildfowling Magazine where a number of tales about fowling in Britain will be found.

There is one crucially important point to be made, relative to wildfowling in the UK, which arises from those journeys to America and Canada. I have now spoken to well over 100 exceptionally experienced North American waterfowl hunters. Without exception, they are all unequivocally damning in their assessment of steel shot. Every one! This does make me wonder whether the "token Yanks" who are hauled out of the woodwork to support the case for banning lead shot in Britain are unprincipled political pawns or merely pig-ignorant. The only non-toxic shot which I have personally found to be acceptable in use is Bismuth but, of course, it is still hopelessly expensive.

In the meantime, however, let's carry on with some of those transatlantic journeys:

South Carolina, 1995

Delta Marsh, Manitoba, 1996, 1997, 1998

Cumberland Marsh, Saskatchewan, 1999
